Advice for Choosing Your Subjects

Students entering Year 11 in 2010 will be placed into one of three (3) strands:

  • QSA1
  • QSA2
  • School Tech

Students may also choose the TAFE TECH course where they are enrolled at Mountain Creek State High School (MCSHS), however, the course is delivered at Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT) at Mooloolaba through a dual process by MCSHS staff and SCIT staff.  Students will be required to make application through a formal process and be selected to study TAFE TECH.

The placement of students in specific strands is based on their Semester 1 report for Year 10.  If a student`s results at the end of Year 10 indicate that he/she is eligible to study in a higher strand, this movement will be adjusted through interview and engotiation with the head of Senior School or Deputy Principal only.

Once a student has been allocated to one of the 3 strands, the student should then consider the following when selecting subjects.

Overall Plan

As an overall plan, you are advised to choose subjects in the strand:

  • you enjoy
  • in which you have demonstrated some ability or aptitude
  • which help you reach your career and employment goals
  • which will develop skills, knowledge and attitudes useful throughout your life

These are quite general points, so it is wise to look in more detail at the guidelines outlined below.

Additional Resources

The following resources are available in schools and give information on subjects and courses needed for careers:

  • The Job Guide provides information on subjects needed for particular occupations.
  • The OZJAC computer program provides similar career information and is the most up to-date source of information on courses in Australia.
  • Other career information, such as literature provided to schools by industry groups, show the various pathways to jobs within these industries.
  • The Queensland Tertiary Courses booklet is useful for information on university courses and higher level TAFE courses.
  • The Tertiary Prerequisites 2010/2011 book provides information on the subjects required for entry to university and TAFE advanced diploma and diploma courses in the Year 2010/2011.
  • Pathways to Further Education and Training  is a handout which gives general information about the education and training system in Australia.
  • Tertiary Entrance for Year 12 Students Not Eligible for an OP is a handout which explains how students who are not eligible for an OP can gain entry to tertiary courses, especially TAFE advanced diploma and diploma courses.
  • JIGCAL

Please be certain with your choices as there will be no subject changes until the end of Semester 1.
